Hey DIYer’s! Welcome to a new series called JoJo’s DIY Dupes...you know that’s gonna be hashtag.
Have you ever found that perfect mirror or furniture piece and say “hello lover”...then look at the price tag and say “what the damn hell?”...love affair over...
Well immediately after the love affair (I move on quickly) my mind will start scheming ways to make something myself? Because it’s just wood and screws and other stuff...right? I have stuff. I have wood and glue and a screw gun so that means I can basically make ANYTHING! I’ll show you...
When I bought the #kinderhookduplex a few years ago it was right after my divorce. I was downsizing from a larger home and property. My son’s room is tiny so I wanted the design to really have a cool impact. I decided to go with a vintage, sporty industrial vibe. I fell in love with this locker dresser from Restoration Hardware Baby and Child. See below:
Da-Damn!!! The “Vintage Locker 9 Door Cabinet was a whopping $1,999! Ummmmm why?! Well I didn’t have two grand to blow on a dresser and even if I did...why would I? I can make that! (I.....meaning Rick)
I immediately started to look for lockers. There are a ton of new lockers online but they are PRICEY too! I was so lucky to find 9 of them on Letgo for just $150! I was halfway there!
I took these home and spray painted them with Rustoleum spray paint in Flat Iron.
Sorry I don’t have any pictures of the spray painting action. I’m good at the “doing”, bad at the documenting!
Next, we went to Lowe’s and picked out some finished pine boards (1'x12'x8') and plywood (4' x 8 board) to build the “shell” to hold these lockers together. I wanted the have a mix of wood and metal and make this feel more like a furniture piece. Lowe’s also has cute furniture legs so we picked them up as well.
We already had wood screws, wood glue, wood stain and polycrylic on hand from previous projects so we didn't have to spend any additional money for those items. (bonus)
Here is the locker dresser "shell" that Rick constructed to hold the spray painted lockers. I stained the shell. Then after the stain dried, I applied two coats of Polycrylic.
Here is the finished piece....
Pretty comparable right? Especially considering the ENORMOUS cost savings.
